Gary Weisman
Gary Weisman is a sculptor whose work explores the timeless complexity of the human condition through the figurative form. Deeply rooted in classical traditions, his sculptures echo the canons of Greek design, the romance of the Renaissance, and the expressive force of Rodin, while also drawing from the universal sculptural language of Brancusi and Egyptian stelae. Weisman’s figures embody a contemporary relevance grounded in historical precedent, confronting the enduring themes of physicality, identity, and human drama. Through these forms, he inspires a sense of awe for the mental and physical heroics we construct, endure, and perform.
A native of Chicago, Weisman studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Columbia College. In 1982, he began teaching drawing at Manatee College in Sarasota, Florida, and from 1986 to 2021, he served on the faculty at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He has exhibited widely since 1987, with numerous solo and group exhibitions, and his work is represented in public and private collections across the United States. Among his many honors, Weisman received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Sculpture Society in 2023.
Currently, Weisman teaches sculpture at the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts in Old Lyme, Connecticut, and operates the Weisman/Ziegler Art Foundry in upstate New York.
