Nicolas Martin (b. 1980) is a realist painter from Paris, who now lives and works in Montreal, Canada. After completing his studies at the respected Auguste Renoir school in Paris, Nicolas decided to deepen his artistic knowledge and diversify his skills by completing the Graphic Design program at the University of Laval in Quebec, Canada.
“I am inspired by everything around me. I am like a sponge. I am fascinated by light and it is generally the light that guides my choice of subjects.
I don’t always have models for my scenes so I am using the light as a figure by painting the banality and the intimacy of a scene embellished by light.
I paint intimacy by placing the light as a revealing element.
I love the way the light effect, transform and embellish everything she touches. Light is a woman that I paint with delicacy.
I paint scenes where the viewer can feel he can be part of it. I often paint chairs, sofas, stairs. All these elements are symbolic of an action, of a usefulness. These elements are very often placed in a certain way to invite people to sit down or to step in the scene.
The fewer elements I put in my scenes, the more the observer will be able to imagine.
I like to paint subjects that people feel they already know, with which they can identify.
My paintings refers to nostalgia and memories. I want them to understand what they see and give the opportunity to deepen the story. I don’t want to own the only truth about my paintings and I want everyone to find their own stories.
Sharing is the most fundamental aspect in art in my opinion and this is why the main reason my paintings are invitations.” – Nicolas Martin
