Shaun Othen
Born in 1969, Shaun Othen grew up in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, where he was introduced early on to the works of classical artists such as Lawrence Alma-Tadema and Alphonse Mucha. Drawn to their luxurious, elegant styles, Othen developed an aesthetic that continues to influence his work today.
He studied at the renowned Falmouth School of Art, where he discovered a passion for figurative painting and pursued a standard of photographic realism using oils. After graduating, he signed with the prestigious Artists Partners Agency, and his commissioned artwork has since appeared on book covers and in high-end magazines worldwide.
Othen believes that a deep understanding of anatomy, paired with life drawing, is essential for any figurative artist. With this in mind, he founded the Dev Art Space, where he and his wife host weekly life-drawing sessions—allowing him to refine his own practice while mentoring other artists.
In recent years, Othen has shifted away from rigid realism toward a more expressive and experimental approach. He now substitutes brushes with alternative tools to emphasize texture and line, blending elements of abstraction with a foundation in realism and form.
